How does home insurance work in Portugal (Seguro Multirriscos Habitação)?

Home insurance in Portugal is commonly known as Seguro Multirriscos Habitação. It combines several risks in one policy: instead of arranging separate cover for fire, water damage or burglary, a multirisk policy brings these protections together. This makes it the standard form of cover for residential property in Portugal.

One important exception concerns flats in a condominium (condomínio): fire insurance (seguro de incêndio) for the building is legally required. Banks also normally require buildings insurance when a property is mortgaged. A broader multirisk policy is not legally compulsory in every case, but is strongly recommended in practice.

As an independent broker, C1 Broker compares the conditions of several Portuguese insurers and explains the policy and claims process in your language. Request a no-obligation quote.

What is covered? The main parts of a multirisk policy

Home insurance in Portugal can be made up of several sections. What you actually need depends on whether you own or rent the property and how the property is used.

Building (seguro do edifício)

Contents (recheio / conteúdo)

Personal liability (responsabilidade civil)

Natural hazards & earthquakes

Other optional features can include glass breakage, theft away from the home, emergency assistance and cover for outdoor areas. We build the policy around your property rather than offering a one-size-fits-all package.

Not sure which sections you need?
We assess your property and how it is used, then recommend suitable cover.

What English-speaking expats and residents should consider

English-speaking expats and residents who own or rent property in Portugal often face questions that differ from those of local policyholders. The most common situations are:

Owner

Owner-occupied property

Tenant

Rented property

Holiday letting

Alojamento Local (AL)

Condomínio

Condominium ownership

The key advantage of advice in English is that you understand what your policy actually covers and avoid costly gaps caused by misunderstood Portuguese policy wording. Let us review your situation.

Regional risks: why location matters

Portugal varies significantly in climate and geology. The right home insurance should reflect the regional risks around your property. A general guide:

RegionRelevant risksWhat we look at
AlgarveStorms, heavy rain, local flooding and many holiday properties.Strong storm and water-damage cover; extended liability for rented properties.
Greater LisbonHigher seismic risk, dense development and high property values.Specific earthquake cover and realistic sums insured.
Madeira & the AzoresSeismic activity, storms and heavy rain.Earthquake cover and a review based on location and construction type.
Comporta & Melides, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, AveiroDifferent coastal, weather and flood risks depending on the area.Individual assessment of location and building type.

This regional overview is general guidance and does not replace an individual assessment of your property.
