How does House Insurance work in Portugal (Seguro Multirriscos Habitação)?
In Portugal, house insurance is commonly known as Seguro Multirriscos Habitação. It combines several risks under one policy, so rather than arranging separate cover for fire, escape of water or burglary, a multirisk policy protects against these events together. It is the standard form of cover for residential property in Portugal.
One important exception concerns apartments within a condominium (condomínio): fire insurance (seguro de incêndio) for the building is legally required. Banks will also normally require buildings insurance where there is a mortgage. A wider multirisk policy is not compulsory in every case, but it is strongly recommended because it protects against far more than fire alone.
As an independent broker, C1 Broker compares the conditions of several Portuguese insurers and explains the policy and claims process in your language. Request a no-obligation quote.
What does a Portuguese home insurance policy cover?
Home insurance in Portugal is made up of several sections. The right combination depends on whether you own or rent the property and how the home is used.
Buildings cover (seguro do edifício)
Covers the permanent structure, including walls, roof and fixed installations, usually against events such as fire, explosion and storm damage. This is essential for property owners.
Contents cover (recheio / conteúdo)
Protects movable possessions such as furniture, electronics, valuables and personal belongings against risks including burglary, fire and escape of water.
Liability cover (responsabilidade civil)
Protects you where damage originating from your home affects another person or property, for example a water leak damaging the apartment below.
Natural hazards & earthquakes
Storms, heavy rain and flooding may be included, while earthquake risk (risco sísmico) is often optional and must be specifically added.
Other options may include accidental glass damage, theft away from the home, emergency assistance such as urgent tradespeople and cover for outside areas. We tailor the policy to your property rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution.
Not sure which cover you need?
We assess your property and how it is used, then recommend suitable cover.
What Expats and residents should consider
Expats and residents who own or rent property in Portugal often face questions that differ from those of local policyholders. The most common situations are:
Homeowner
Main residence
You will usually insure the buildings and contents together, including liability cover. Where the property is mortgaged, the lender will normally require buildings insurance.
Tenant
Rented home
You will generally need contents and liability cover, as the landlord is responsible for insuring the building. Liability protection is particularly important for damage you may cause as a tenant.
Holiday letting
Alojamento Local (AL)
Properties registered for Alojamento Local have a different risk profile. Wider guest liability and, in some cases, commercial extensions may be advisable or required. A standard private home policy is often insufficient.
Condomínio
Homeownergemeinschaft
The condominium insures the shared building under the compulsory fire requirement. Your own policy can add contents, liability and risks specific to your individual unit.
The key advantage of advice in English is that you understand what your policy actually covers and avoid costly gaps caused by misunderstood Portuguese policy wording. Let us review your situation.
Regional risks: why location matters
Portugal varies significantly in climate and geology. The right home insurance should reflect the regional risks around your property. A general guide:
| Region | Key risks | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Algarve | Storms, heavy rain, local flooding and many holiday properties. | Strong storm and water-damage cover; extended liability for AL properties. |
| Greater Lisbon | Higher seismic risk, dense development and high property values. | Specific earthquake (risco sísmico) cover and realistic sums insured. |
| Madeira & the Azores | Seismic activity, storms and heavy rain. | Earthquake cover and a review based on location and construction type. |
| Comporta & Melides, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro | Different coastal, weather and flood risks depending on the area. | Individual assessment of location and building type. |
This regional overview is general guidance and does not replace an individual assessment of your property.

Frequently asked questions about home insurance in Portugal
Is home insurance compulsory in Portugal?
For apartment owners in a condominium (condomínio), fire insurance (seguro de incêndio) for the building is legally required. Banks will also normally require buildings insurance where there is a mortgage. A wider multirisk policy is not compulsory in every situation, but it is strongly recommended because it protects against much more than fire alone. We assess your individual case.
What does Seguro Multirriscos Habitação mean?
Seguro Multirriscos Habitação is the Portuguese term for a combined buildings and contents policy. It typically includes fire, escape of water, storm, burglary or theft, broken glass and personal liability under one policy. The right sections and sums insured depend on the property, its location and how it is used.
What is the difference between seguro do edifício and recheio?
The buildings section (edifício) covers the permanent structure, including walls, roof and fixed installations. Contents cover (recheio / conteúdo) protects movable belongings such as furniture, electronics and personal possessions. Owner-occupiers usually insure both, while tenants generally need contents and liability cover because the landlord insures the building.
Are earthquakes covered in Portugal?
Earthquake risk (risco sísmico) is not automatically included in every policy and normally needs to be added as an optional section. This is particularly relevant in Lisbon, Madeira and the Azores. We make sure the level of cover is appropriate for your property’s location.
Do I need a different policy for Alojamento Local?
Yes. Properties rented through Alojamento Local have a different risk profile. Extended liability and, in some cases, commercial cover may be required.
Can I arrange home insurance with advice in English?
C1 Broker advises you in English and manages communication with the Portuguese insurer. You can understand the policy, its terms and the claims process without having to work through Portuguese insurance documents on your own.
How does a claim work in Portugal?
The claim is reported to the insurer (participação de sinistro), documented and, where necessary, assessed by a loss adjuster (perito). As your broker, we help with notification, supporting evidence and communication with the insurer throughout the settlement process.
How much does home insurance cost in Portugal?
The premium depends on the sums insured, construction type, location, optional cover such as earthquakes, how the property is used and the policy excess. Generic prices are therefore rarely meaningful. We prepare a tailored, no-obligation comparison based on your property.
