How much does home insurance cost in Portugal?
The cost of home insurance in Portugal depends on several factors: the insured value of the building and contents, the region and location, the age and condition of the property, and specific risks such as a pool, garden or holiday letting. For an average apartment in the Algarve, annual premiums are often in the low hundreds of euros; a larger villa with a pool and higher rebuild value will naturally cost more.
For financed properties, Portuguese banks normally require at least fire cover for the building. Other sections – contents, liability, natural hazards or glass breakage – should be selected according to the property and how it is used. As an independent broker, we compare suitable options and explain the differences in English.

Common risks for properties in Portugal
Portugal’s climate and geography create specific risks that should be reflected in the policy:
Storms and heavy rain on the Atlantic coast: these can damage roofs, façades and outdoor areas.
Water damage: burst pipes are among the most common causes of claims, particularly in condominiums.
Theft and burglary: relevant for second homes or properties left empty for long periods.
Pool and garden: these can create additional risks involving accidents or outdoor damage. In Madeira and the Azores, seismic risk should also be considered.
Frequently asked questions
Is the condominium insurance enough for my property?
Not always. Condominium insurance normally covers common areas and certain building responsibilities, but may not fully protect the inside of your unit, your contents or damage caused to third parties. Your own policy can fill these gaps.
What is Seguro Multirriscos Habitação?
Seguro Multirriscos Habitação is the standard multirisk home policy used in Portugal. It can combine several sections such as fire, storms, water damage, glass breakage, theft and liability.
Who is responsible for water damage in a condominium?
In a condominium, responsibility depends on where the damage started and which policies are in place. Your own policy with water-damage and liability cover can be important for damage to your home or neighbouring units.
Do I need insurance as a tenant?
Yes, it can be useful. The owner normally insures the building, but not your personal belongings. Contents and liability cover can protect furniture, electronics and damage caused to the rented property or third parties.
Am I covered if I rent the property as Alojamento Local?
Alojamento Local has a different risk profile. A standard private home policy may not fully cover commercial letting. It is important to declare the use of the property and arrange suitable liability and property cover.
How does a claim work in Portugal?
The claim is reported to the insurer and documented with the necessary information. C1 Broker can support you with communication, documents and follow-up throughout the process.
