What is compulsory in Portugal and what Fidelidade Auto covers

Motor liability insurance (responsabilidade civil automóvel) is compulsory for every motor vehicle in Portugal (Decree-Law 291/2007, Article 4). The legal minimum is currently €7,750,000 per accident, of which €6,450,000 for bodily injury and €1,300,000 for property damage. Fidelidade covers this legal minimum in the Auto 1 plan and liability up to €50,000,000 in all other plans.

Liability cover does not pay for damage to your own car. For that, Fidelidade offers plans with own-damage cover (danos ao veículo), for example against theft, fire or an accident you cause. How car insurance in Portugal works in general is explained on our page car insurance in Portugal.

Fidelidade Auto: the plans

Fidelidade Auto (contract name Liber 3G) comes in fixed plans. Auto 1 to Auto 4 build on each other; in addition there is Autoestima, comprehensive cover with a reduced sum insured. The product is designed for privately used cars up to 3.5 tonnes; for company cars we compare other policies.

Auto 1

Liability at the legal minimum, breakdown and accident assistance at the Basic or Standard level, and driver cover (€10,000 for death or permanent disability, €1,000 for medical costs).

Auto 2

Liability up to €50m, assistance at the Plus or VIP level (with hotel costs, higher towing limits and a replacement car for up to 5 days a year), extended driver cover up to €500,000; legal protection and glass breakage as options.

Auto 3

Everything in Auto 2, plus legal protection and glass breakage, own-damage cover for fire, lightning and explosion, theft and robbery, natural events and vandalism. A replacement car after an accident is available as an option, in Auto 3 in Portugal only. Collision is not covered.

Auto 4

Everything in Auto 3, plus collision and rollover and a replacement car after an accident, and after a breakdown as an option. Only in Auto 4: purchase value cover after a total loss for young cars, and a €0 excess.

Autoestima covers the same own-damage risks as Auto 4, including collision, but insures the car at 70% of its market value; repairs are carried out at the garage Fidelidade chooses, also with used or aftermarket parts; a replacement car after an accident is available as an option. In Auto 3 and Auto 4 you choose the excess (franquia) for the own-damage covers within the insurer’s rules; in Autoestima it is fixed. Detailed limits and terms are set out in Fidelidade’s pre-contractual information (in Portuguese, September 2026); your policy is what counts.

Which plan suits your car?
We compare Fidelidade with other insurers and explain the differences in English. For the request you need your car details, your driving licence and your tax number (NIF); you receive a quote with no obligation, and no contract is concluded automatically.

New to Portugal, switching, new car or second car

Which plan makes sense depends mainly on your car and your situation. We often see four cases:

New to Portugal

Car with Portuguese plates

A regular Portuguese policy usually requires Portuguese registration; for imported cars, the customs declaration (DAV) helps. Fidelidade assistance applies abroad only if your habitual residence is in Portugal, and it is suspended after 60 days abroad.

Switching

Bring your no-claims history

Fidelidade rates new customers on their years of insurance and claims in the last five years, as shown in a claims history statement (declaração de historial de sinistros). A statement from an insurer in another EU member state can be added to your Fidelidade claims history on request if it covers the last five years; how a UK or other foreign certificate counts is decided case by case.

New car

New or financed

Auto 4 is usually the right choice here, with collision and rollover cover. For cars no more than twelve months old, purchase value cover (valor de aquisição) can be added: after a total loss, until the end of the policy year in which the car turns three, Fidelidade pays the list price on the purchase date, including factory options and extras bought with the car.

Older car

Second car or city car

For a car of low value, Auto 1 or Auto 2 is often enough. If an older car should still be covered against collision, Autoestima is an option, with 70% of the market value as the sum insured.

We work out with you which plan suits you and explain the Portuguese policy terms in English before you sign.

Frequently asked questions about Fidelidade car insurance in Portugal

Is car insurance compulsory in Portugal?

Yes. Motor liability insurance is compulsory for every motor vehicle (Decree-Law 291/2007), currently with a minimum of €7,750,000 per accident. Fidelidade covers the legal minimum in Auto 1 and up to €50,000,000 in the other plans. Own-damage cover is optional.

Five: Auto 1 and Auto 2 without own-damage cover, Auto 3 with own-damage cover for fire, theft, natural events and vandalism, Auto 4, which adds collision, and Autoestima, with collision but 70% of the market value as the sum insured.

For cars, liability and own-damage cover apply automatically in the EU and in Andorra, Gibraltar, Iceland, Montenegro, Norway, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Serbia; the replacement car in Auto 3 applies in Portugal only. Assistance for the car and its occupants applies in Europe and the non-European Mediterranean countries, provided your habitual residence is in Portugal; it is suspended while you or the car stay abroad for more than 60 days. If you only have an address in Portugal but habitually live abroad, assistance applies in Portugal only.

Not automatically. Fidelidade rates you on your years of insurance and claims in the last five years; without a history, the policy starts without a discount. A statement from an insurer in another EU member state is added to your claims history on request. Whether and how a foreign no-claims record is taken into account is decided case by case, and we clarify this for you.

It applies to the own-damage covers. In Auto 3 and Auto 4 you choose it within the insurer’s rules, and in Auto 4 a €0 excess is possible if the required additional covers are included; in Autoestima it is fixed. For glass breakage, depending on the option, there is no excess within the partner network or anywhere. To find a partner garage, use the Fidelidade network search.

The form asks for the make, model and horsepower of your car, its Portuguese registration and year, whether it is imported (then the customs declaration DAV, if available), your date of birth and the date of your first driving licence, your tax number (NIF) and address in Portugal, the covers you want and when cover should start, your years of insurance and claims-free years, and, if you are already insured, the current insurer and expiry date, plus your no-claims certificate if you have one. Mention in the observations that you are interested in Fidelidade: we will then request a quote from Fidelidade and, if you wish, comparison quotes, with no obligation.

Our office is at Av. Duarte Pacheco 13 R/C, 8135-104 Almancil in the Algarve. We advise customers throughout Portugal in English, German and Portuguese, by phone on +351 289 392 452 or by email at [email protected]. To report a claim, use our page file a car insurance claim.

The premium depends on the car and its value, the chosen plan and excess, how the car is used and your bonus-malus rating. There is therefore no single price that applies to everyone. We prepare a free, no-obligation comparison for you.
