How much does car insurance cost in Portugal?
The cost of car insurance in Portugal depends on several factors: the vehicle type and value, the age and driving experience of the driver, annual mileage, the level of cover selected (third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive), and your claims history under the Portuguese bonus-malus system. Basic third-party liability (Terceiros) is significantly cheaper than comprehensive cover (danos próprios) for a newer vehicle.
As a rough guide, third-party cover for a small car often starts in the low three-digit range per year, while comprehensive cover for a higher-value vehicle can cost several times more. Binding prices are only available after an individual calculation – that is exactly why we obtain comparison offers for you.
Small car, third-party liability (Terceiros)
Basic mandatory cover · cheapest option · calculated individually
New car, comprehensive cover (danos próprios)
Comprehensive protection · higher premium · calculated individually
Registering and insuring a car in Portugal
If you move to Portugal permanently, you generally need to register your vehicle and obtain a Portuguese number plate (matrícula). Valid third-party car insurance is required for registration – without it, the vehicle may not be driven on public roads. We handle the insurance side and make sure your vehicle is correctly covered from day one.
In Portugal, the IPO (Inspeção Periódica Obrigatória), the regular technical vehicle inspection, is also mandatory. Passenger cars usually need their first IPO after four years, with shorter intervals as the vehicle gets older. For trips abroad, the Carta Verde (Green Card) acts as international proof of insurance. The bonus-malus system also affects the premium: your no-claims history from another country is not automatically transferred, but in individual cases it can be recognised with a no-claims certificate. We check this with you.
Frequently asked questions
Is third-party car insurance mandatory in Portugal?
Yes. In Portugal, third-party liability insurance (responsabilidade civil obrigatória, commonly called “Terceiros”) is legally required for every registered vehicle (Decreto-Lei 291/2007). It covers injury and property damage you cause to third parties, but not damage to your own vehicle. Without valid liability insurance, a vehicle may not be driven on public roads in Portugal.
What do Terceiros, fire and theft, and danos próprios mean?
“Terceiros” is the legally required third-party liability cover and only covers damage to third parties. Fire and theft cover extends protection to risks affecting your own vehicle, such as theft, fire, glass breakage and natural events. “Danos próprios” refers to comprehensive cover (contra todos os riscos) – it also covers accidental damage to your own vehicle caused by the driver. We explain the differences in English and recommend the right cover level.
What is the IPO and when is it due?
The IPO (Inspeção Periódica Obrigatória) is the legally required technical vehicle inspection in Portugal. Passenger cars usually require their first IPO after four years, with shorter intervals as the vehicle gets older. Exact deadlines depend on the vehicle type and first registration date. We can point you to the relevant authorities and align your insurance accordingly.
Can I use my previous no-claims discount in Portugal?
Portugal uses a bonus-malus system. A direct transfer of a previous no-claims discount is not automatic, but in individual cases it can be recognised with a no-claims certificate from your previous insurer. We check which insurers can take your claims-free history into account and help you gather the necessary documents.
How do I register my foreign car in Portugal?
If you live permanently in Portugal, you generally need to register your vehicle and obtain a Portuguese number plate (matrícula). This includes recognition of vehicle documents and technical checks. We support the insurance side and make sure your vehicle is correctly insured once registered. Tax and administrative details are clarified together with the relevant authorities.
How does a claim work in English?
In the event of a claim, we are your dedicated point of contact – in English. You report the claim to us, we communicate with the Portuguese insurer, help with claim registration and support you until settlement. Abroad, the Carta Verde (Green Card) also serves as international proof of insurance. This means you do not have to deal with Portuguese authorities and insurance correspondence in a foreign language on your own.
